Australian Music Is Bloody Great: Dune Rats

Amrap started a radio series in 2020 called Australian Music Is Bloody Great with Australian artists presenting their favourite recent Australian music. These shows are made available to all community radio stations across the country. Australian Music Is Bloody Great features a rotating roster of Aussie music faves presenting their handpicked selections with previous guests ranging from Dune Rats to Sampa The Great to Phil Jameison.

The series hasn’t kicked off for 2023 just yet, so we continue our summer series of bringing some of our favourite selectors from last year.

Brisbane rock heavies Dune Rats have obtained national success and an ARIA nomination for Best Rock Album since forming in 2010. Originally starting out as a duo with Danny Bues (guitar/vocals) and BC Michael Marks (drums/backing vocals), the group have since welcomed Bleeding Knees Club bassist Brett Jansch to the fold. Dune Rats released their fourth studio album Real Rare Whale last month and to celebrate, Brett shares some of the band's local favourites for Australian Music Is Bloody Great.

The Chats - Struck By Lightning (Bargain Bin Records)

These legends are so red hot. I was spoilt for choice to pick a track and they've got a new album out, so get a hold of that. They are relentless in ripping together these bangers of dynamite or, I guess in this case, a bolt of lightning.

King Stingray - Lupa (Cooking Vinyl Australia)

[King Stingray] are, I believe, Australia's most loved band at the moment and rightfully so. The music is so original and amazing. I'm just so proud and happy that they're in the spotlight - to shine so that our young crew can hear this kind of stuff. It really is amazing stuff. It is new but has that amazing nostalgic feeling of hearing The Oils [Midnight Oil] when I was a kid.

Amyl and The Sniffers - Security (Virgin Music Australia)

What a tough track. When the bass and the guitar do those notes together and they walk up that ladder - or whatever it is - it's just happening. It is so tough but at the same time wickedly funny, I just dig it. Amy is an absolute superstar and a genius lyric writer. The rhythm section is pounding. So sick, just so sick.

The Terrys - Rolling Stone (Independant)

[The Terrys] have been around for a couple of years now but the more I listen, the more they are finding their sound. It has that kind of step about it but it's rock music and it's mellow. They're cool, they've got their thing going on. This one has a real vibe about it that pin points it.

Towns - Season 5 (Break My Fall) (Farmer & The Owl)

We've recently just played a show down in Adelaide with these guys. They are truly beautiful humans. The quality of their videos and and songs is just amazingly high. They're a really great band.

Teenage Joans - Terrible (Domestic La La)

This is a tank tune! Powerful stuff. I'm blown away by how good of a songwriters they are. I'm pretty sure that they're pretty young. They're really on to something. I love how this song goes to this outro bit that's as big as the chorus. It is a full banger, I'm loving it.
